Bansud, Oriental Mindoro - On July 11, 2024, under the supervision of NIA MIMAROPA Regional Manager Engr. Ronilio M. Cervantes and NIA Mindoro Oriental-Marinduque-Romblon (MOMARO) Irrigation Management Office (IMO) Acting Division Manager Engr. Maria Victoria O. Malenab, the Sumviltad Irrigators Association, Inc. conducted the first harvest under the National Irrigation Administration's (NIA) Contract Farming Program, part of the Seguridad sa Pagkain Tungo sa Bagong Pilipinas Program.
The Sumviltad Irrigators Association, participating in the program with 50 hectares and benefiting 37 farmers, utilized the NSIC 2021 666H seed variety for the third crop of 2024. Across Oriental Mindoro, 290.65 hectares, and a total of 1,940 hectares within the entire MIMAROPA Region, are covered under the NIA Contract Farming Program. The remaining areas are expected to be harvested between the third week of July and the second week of November 2024.
IA President and R4B Federation of IA President Patricio M. Laberez Jr. extended his gratitude to NIA Administrator Engr. Eduardo Eddie G. Guillen for initiating the program, expressing hope that it will continue to prosper as it truly benefits the lives of the farmers.
In MIMAROPA, a total of 1,940 hectares are under the NIA Contract Farming Program.
The program aims to enhance food security and support local farmers through structured farming agreements, ensuring better yields and economic stability.
The achievement highlights the dedication of the farmers and the effectiveness of the NIA program in promoting agricultural productivity and food security in the region.
