NIA Occidental Mindoro Conducts 2nd Tree Planting Activity

Magsaysay, Occidental Mindoro - With the unwavering support of NIA-MIMAROPA Acting Regional Manager Ronilio M. Cervantes, the NIA-Occidental Mindoro Irrigation Management Office (OMIMO), led by Division Manager Raymundo L. Calusin, effectively carried out the second tree-planting activity of the year at the plantation area in Sitio Nalwak, Brgy. Purnaga, Magsaysay, on November 6, 2023.

The said initiative, in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), is part of the implementation of management plans for the protection and rehabilitation of Irrigation Water Sources (IWS). It aims to minimize soil erosion and sedimentation affecting irrigation systems, lifespan, efficiency, and serviceability. It also helps restore lost forests, repair damaged systems, and mitigate climate change.

To ensure that the seedlings will be planted properly, Forester Lito Ramos of DENR educates everyone on the step-by-step procedure of planting fruit-bearing trees.

A total of 1549 fruit-bearing trees, including 205 Mangga seedlings, 648 calamansi seedlings, 100 jackfruit seedlings, 155 guyabano seedlings, 16 coconut seedlings, 45 calumpit seedlings, 160 pomelo seedlings, 135 santol seedlings, and 85 guava seedlings were planted on 5 hectares of forest land in Caguray River Irrigation System (RIS) watershed. These planted seedlings will not only provide fruits but will also benefit upland farmers by supplementing their livelihood.

Aside from NIA OMIMO officials and staff, other agencies including, the Philippine National Police (PNP) – Special Action Force (SAF), Philippine Army, DENR, and Barangay LGU of Purnaga joined the said endeavor.
