NIA MIMAROPA Meets Occidental Mindoro Leaders to Combat El Niño's Threat to Agriculture

Magsaysay, Occidental Mindoro - On March 12, 2024, the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) MIMAROPA, led by Regional Manager Engr. Ronilio M. Cervantes, held a crucial meeting with municipal mayors in Occidental Mindoro including, Hon. Dante C. Esteban of Calintaan, Hon. Rey Ladaga of San Jose, Ernesto C. Pablo Jr. of Rizal, and Hon. Cesar M. Tria Jr. of Magsaysay. Additionally, the meeting in Sablayan was participated by Municipal Administrator Norman A. Novio, representatives from Planning and Engineering offices, and the Municipal Agriculture Office. Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV of the Office of Civil Defense also lent his support, attending the meeting held in Rizal.

The meeting centered on tackling the challenges of El Niño, particularly its impact on agricultural production. Mitigation strategies, including both quick-response solutions like deploying pumps and providing diesel fuel, and long-term solutions, were discussed.

Collaboration with local government units (LGUs) was emphasized. Municipal leaders and agricultural offices pledged their support in assisting farmers, including providing fuel for existing pumps within their jurisdictions.

This proactive approach demonstrates NIA MIMAROPA's dedication to bolstering local agriculture.

Senior Engineer A Emelito V. Urriquia, Institutional Development Program (IDP) implementers, and other operations personnel from NIA Occidental Mindoro Irrigation Management Office (IMO) were also present during the meeting.

Following the meeting, Regional Manager Cervantes evaluated the province's irrigation systems through a field inspection of both national and communal systems.
