Multi-Agency Effort: Mitigating El Niño Impact in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro

Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro - NIA MIMAROPA Regional Manager Engr. Ronilio M. Cervantes, along with NIA Mindoro Oriental-Marinduque-Romblon (MOMARO) Irrigation Management Office (IMO) Acting Division Manager Engr. Maria Victoria O. Malenab, participated on El Niño response activity on March 15, 2024 at Market Site, Poblacion, Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro. Joined by Department of Agriculture (DA) Undersecretary for Operations Engr. Roger V. Navarro and DA Assistant Secretary U-Nichols A. Manalo, the event also saw participation from representatives of other agencies including Department of Science Technology (DOST) PAGASA, Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC), Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC), DA Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (Philmec), local government unit (LGU), provincial government unit (PLGU) and local farmers.

The purpose of the gathering was to distribute subsidies to those affected by the El Niño phenomenon. PCIC provided indemnification checks, ACPC allocated 40 million pesos to the Rural Bank of Bansud for farmers' loans, DA PhilMech distributed tractors, and the Department of Agriculture distributed vegetable seeds.

NIA MIMAROPA presented updates on the areas affected by El Niño, 2024 ongoing projects, proposed additional solar pump projects, projects scheduled for 2025, and the ongoing study regarding the proposed impounding dam.

The activity also aimed to address the challenges posed by El Niño and to strategize effective responses to mitigate its impact on agriculture and the local community in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro.
