OCCIDENTAL MINDORO DIVISION MANAGER JOINS PUBLIC CONSULTATION FOR MONGPONG RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT

Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro - Occidental Mindoro Irrigation Management Office (OMIMO) Division Manager Raymundo L. Calusin actively participated in the Public Consultation organized by Bird’s Nest Resources Corporation (BNRC). This consultation specifically focused on the dredging project of the proposed Mongpong River Restoration Project situated in Brgy. Tuban, Brgy. San Nicolas, Brgy. Sta. Lucia, and Brgy. Malisbong in Sablayan. The event, held at the Brgy. Tuban Covered Court in the said municipality on December 1, 2023. Engr. Ronicka A. Reyes and Economist Jinky E. Santos also attended the event.

The Mongpong River watershed, acknowledged as one of Occidental Mindoro's vital watersheds providing water and irrigation for the local community, has been identified as critical. To address this issue, the proposed dredging project aims to increase the discharge capacity and reduce the accumulation of silt at the river mouth.

Through this consultation initiative, various stakeholders such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB), local government units (LGUs), and other agencies come together to facilitate an open and transparent exchange of information, and perspectives concerning the environmental impact of the proposed project, which is presently in the process of applying for an Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC).

Division Manager Calusin emphasized a crucial concern during the consultation, expressing the need for NIA to obtain a copy of the dredging masterplan. This request is for the agency to have a reference point for the upcoming projects in the designated area.

The participation of OMIMO in this consultation stresses their commitment to ensuring informed decision-making and responsible environmental management in the region.
