NIA OCCIDENTAL MINDORO IMO CONDUCTS 3RD TREE PLANTING ACTIVITY

Magsaysay, Occidental Mindoro - In an effort to promote environmental sustainability and protect vital water resources, the National Irrigation Administration Occidental Mindoro Irrigation Management Office (OMIMO) initiated its 3rd Tree Planting Activity. This significant event was held at Brgy. Purnaga, Sitio Nalwak in Magsaysay on December 7, 2023, in collaboratioan with key partners, including the Magsaysay Local Government Unit (LGU), Barangay Purnaga Local Government Unit (LGU), the Philippine National Police Special Action Force (PNP-SAF), the Philippine Army, Purnaga Elementary School, Kabalikat, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Under the esteemed leadership of NIA-MIMAROPA Acting Regional Manager Ronilio M. Cervantes and guided by OMIMO Division Manager Raymundo L. Calusin, the primary objective of this effort is the rehabilitation and protection of the Caguray Watershed to ensure consistent streamflow of irrigation systems downstream. The project also intends to promote human security by mitigating the risk of flooding and other natural hazards, fostering a safer living environment for the local community.

A total of 1,350 fruit-bearing trees were planted on 4.5 hectares of forest land, including mango, calamansi, mandarin, pomelo, coconut, langka, guyabano, guava, avocado, santol, kalumpit, and duhat. This aims to contribute to local economic development that will provide long-term income sources to upland farmers.
