Palawan - The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) - Palawan Irrigation Management Office (PIMO) headed by Division Manager Engr. Fidel P. Martinez conducted the 6th tree planting activity of fruit-bearing trees on November 5, 2022, along the periphery of the Ibato-Iraan Small Reservoir Irrigation Project (SRIP) in Aborlan since 2012. The NIA, Irrigators Association (IA), Tagbanua Indigenous Peoples (IPs), and Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) all participated in this activity.
Around one hundred (100) participants were able to plant a total of 500 seedlings consisting of 376 pieces of rambutan, 50 pieces of marang, 30 pieces of durian, 34 pieces of langka, and 10 pieces of mangosteen which will benefit the residents. This activity was anchored to the compromise agreement between the NIA and the Tagbanua Indigenous Cultural Community of Barangays Iraan, Sagpangan, and Isaub as stated (d) Subject to existing laws, rules, and regulations being implemented by the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR), IP and NIA agree to jointly undertake a reforestation or tree planting project at covered areas of the subject barangays.
Palawan IMO aims to raise the value of unity and cooperation within the NIA, NCIP, LGU-Aborlan, Barangay Councils of Iraan, Sagpangan, and Isaub, IPs of Aborlan and farmer-beneficiaries of the irrigation system.
Moreover, this tree planting activity creates buffer zones that aligned with the requirement of the Environmental Compliance Certificate of Ibato-Iraan SRIP to provide noise attenuation, heat, and some pollution absorption and provide protection to watershed areas in the advancement of many ecosystem services.
Palawan IMO Division Manager Engr. Fidel P. Martinez emphasized the importance of tree planting activity as a way to protect the environment and secure food security by planting fruit-bearing trees that will benefit the farmers and/or residents in Aborlan./DCC
